Retirement Target Over Time
Method and scope
Today’s monthly spending grows with assumed annual inflation until retirement. The target funds annual spending at the start of each retirement year, using the real return (1 + nominal return) / (1 + inflation) − 1. State pensions, other income, tax, fees and longevity beyond the entered duration are excluded. Returns and inflation are assumptions, not forecasts.
Using this calculator in Malaysia
This is a spending-based target in MYR, not an entitlement calculation for Malaysia. It excludes government pension income and other assets. Use the separate local pension calculator for the supported pension model, then consider any income outside this target separately.
Try the starting example
Monthly spending today: RM 2,500; Years until retirement: 25; Years in retirement: 25; Assumed annual return (nominal): 5%; Assumed annual inflation: 3%.
Estimated retirement fund needed: RM 1,258,737.37.
Compare one assumption at a time
The assumed return changes the spending target under the model’s real-return calculation. Keep inflation, spending and retirement duration fixed for this comparison. A smaller modelled target at a higher return does not establish that the plan is sustainable under variable actual returns. These fictional scenarios use the starting inputs printed above, not your current entries in the interactive calculator.
| Assumed annual return (nominal) | Estimated retirement fund needed | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 3% | RM 1,570,333.45 | One changed input |
| 5% | RM 1,258,737.37 | Starting example |
| 7% | RM 1,032,052.60 | One changed input |
Are you using chargeable income and regular EPF wages correctly?
The income-tax tool uses chargeable income after reliefs for its supported assessment year. EPF instead uses regular monthly wages within its supported age and wage range. Official contribution bands can produce a step change at a wage boundary, so multiplying salary by a percentage can disagree with the displayed contribution.
