Method and scope
Retirement-annuity/fund accumulation with monthly employee and employer contributions and an assumed return after fees. The first-year indicative deduction ceiling is the smallest of contributions, 27.5% of the qualifying income base you enter, and R430,000 under the 2026/27 SARS guide. Confirm the qualifying base using the remuneration/taxable-income rules; the additional taxable-income limitation, carry-forward and lump-sum exclusions are not calculated. No tax refund is added to the fund. Two-pot allocation, savings-component withdrawals, preservation transfers, retirement income, tax on withdrawals and State grants are excluded. Contributions and rules remain constant.
Try the starting example
Current balance: R 10 000; Monthly contribution: R 300; Monthly employer retirement contribution: R 200; Annual qualifying deduction base (see scope): R 360 000; Assumed annual return (nominal): 5%; Years: 20.
Projected balance: R 232 643,24.
Compare one assumption at a time
Only the assumed investment return changes; contribution inputs stay fixed. Check any eligibility or contribution-limit warning before using a result. A projected balance does not establish withdrawal income or tax relief. Where no editable return is supported, use the profile-specific interpretation below. These fictional scenarios use the starting inputs printed above, not your current entries in the interactive calculator.
| Assumed annual return (nominal) | Projected balance | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 3% | R 182 358,55 | One changed input |
| 5% | R 232 643,24 | Starting example |
| 7% | R 300 850,72 | One changed input |
Is the retirement contribution affordable from your actual monthly pay?
The PAYE estimate includes the selected age rebate and capped employee UIF, but excludes other payroll deductions. The retirement tool uses a separate qualifying deduction base and illustrates a ceiling, not an automatic refund. Check the employer contribution and deduction base before comparing retirement scenarios.
To reproduce the table, reset the calculator, change only the named input and compare the result and any warning. Record the assumptions with your result. See worked planning examples and our calculation and correction process.
