Growth Projection
Method and scope
KiwiSaver accumulation starts 1 July 2026 with constant salary and total taxable income. Employee and gross employer rates are selected from the supported standard rates; temporary 3% reductions are excluded. A selected 3.5% rate increases to 4% in April 2028 (month 22); higher selected rates stay unchanged. Employer contributions are reduced by your selected ESCT rate: check the correct rate with payroll, as salary alone does not establish it. Return is assumed after fund tax and fees. Government contributions are OFF unless you confirm full-year eligibility throughout the projection; then 25% of employee contributions, capped at $260.72, is credited each June if entered total taxable income is no more than $180,000. This is a year-end timing simplification, not an actual payment date. Part-year eligibility, salary growth, savings suspensions, first-home withdrawals and NZ Super are excluded. End the projection by age 65. Future rules other than the scheduled 2028 increase are held constant.
Try the starting example
Current balance: $10,000; Annual gross salary (held constant): $60,000; Annual total taxable income for government eligibility: $60,000; Age at start: 35; Employee contribution rate (2026): 3.5%; Employer contribution rate before ESCT (2026): 3.5%; Your applicable ESCT rate (check with payroll): 30%; Eligible for full-year government contribution throughout?: No / unsure — exclude government contribution; Assumed annual return after fund tax and fees: 5%; Years: 20.
Projected balance: $164,564.32.
Compare one assumption at a time
Only the assumed investment return changes; contribution inputs stay fixed. Check any eligibility or contribution-limit warning before using a result. A projected balance does not establish withdrawal income or tax relief. Where no editable return is supported, use the profile-specific interpretation below. These fictional scenarios use the starting inputs printed above, not your current entries in the interactive calculator.
| Assumed annual return after fund tax and fees | Projected balance | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 3% | $128,249.05 | One changed input |
| 5% | $164,564.32 | Starting example |
| 7% | $214,119.18 | One changed input |
Have you separated contributions from the return assumption?
The KiwiSaver model separates employee, employer and eligible government contributions, including its stated rate transition. Do not replace those contributions with the assumed investment return. Compare employer amounts after the selected ESCT treatment and check the government eligibility choice before interpreting the balance.
