Method and scope
RRSP accumulation, not CPP/OAS or a pension-income entitlement. Enter available contribution room from your CRA records and assume that same room is available each projected year. Employee and employer RRSP contributions both consume that room; tax deductions/refunds, unused-room calculations, the $2,000 excess-contribution tolerance and withdrawal taxes are not modelled. The 2026 new-room dollar ceiling is $33,810, but actual room can differ with earned income, pension adjustments and carry-forward, so no universal room is assumed. Contributions are monthly at month end; return is an assumption after fees. Projection must end by age 71; RRIF conversion is excluded.
Try the starting example
Current balance: $10,000; Monthly contribution: $300; Monthly employer RRSP contribution: $0; Available annual RRSP contribution room (assumed each year): $10,000; Age at start: 35; Assumed annual return (nominal): 5%; Years: 20.
Projected balance: $150,436.50.
Compare one assumption at a time
Only the assumed investment return changes; contribution inputs stay fixed. Check any eligibility or contribution-limit warning before using a result. A projected balance does not establish withdrawal income or tax relief. Where no editable return is supported, use the profile-specific interpretation below. These fictional scenarios use the starting inputs printed above, not your current entries in the interactive calculator.
| Assumed annual return (nominal) | Projected balance | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 3% | $116,698.15 | One changed input |
| 5% | $150,436.50 | Starting example |
| 7% | $196,665.39 | One changed input |
Are you comparing a mortgage term with its amortization period?
Use the amortization period in the payment calculator. The Canadian fixed-rate Home Loan model converts a semi-annually compounded quoted rate to monthly payments, but holds it unchanged across the illustration. A renewal at a different rate changes the remaining schedule. The RRSP tool separately requires your own available contribution room.
To reproduce the table, reset the calculator, change only the named input and compare the result and any warning. Record the assumptions with your result. See worked planning examples and our calculation and correction process.
