Method and scope
Relief-at-source private pension/SIPP illustration: your net payment is divided by 0.8, adding basic-rate relief; employer payments are added separately. Enter an assumed annual return after fees. No further higher-rate relief, salary sacrifice, State Pension or withdrawal tax is modelled. The standard annual allowance is £60,000 in 2026–27; tapering, relevant earnings, money purchase annual allowance and carry-forward can change your position. Eligibility for relief is not assessed. Future contributions and limits are held constant.
Try the starting example
Current balance: £10,000; Your monthly payment (net, relief at source): £300; Monthly employer contribution: £200; Assumed annual return (nominal): 5%; Years: 20.
Projected balance: £263,470.76.
Compare one assumption at a time
Only the assumed investment return changes; contribution inputs stay fixed. Check any eligibility or contribution-limit warning before using a result. A projected balance does not establish withdrawal income or tax relief. Where no editable return is supported, use the profile-specific interpretation below. These fictional scenarios use the starting inputs printed above, not your current entries in the interactive calculator.
| Assumed annual return (nominal) | Projected balance | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 3% | £206,981.20 | One changed input |
| 5% | £263,470.76 | Starting example |
| 7% | £339,920.22 | One changed input |
Are you comparing money available now with money set aside for retirement?
A cash savings goal and a SIPP balance answer different questions. The SIPP model includes basic-rate relief under its stated assumptions, while the savings tool excludes tax and account restrictions. Keep accessible savings separate from a retirement balance when comparing the results.
To reproduce the table, reset the calculator, change only the named input and compare the result and any warning. Record the assumptions with your result. See worked planning examples and our calculation and correction process.
